Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is developing a high-speed RWD under FHWA sponsored research. Until the development of the RWD it was only practical to measure the surface characteristics of pavement (roughness, rutting, cracking, etc.) on a network basis. The RWD is a non-contact, nondestructive method for measuring the structural response of highway pavements. It is capable of measuring continuous deflection profiles of about 300 lane-miles of pavement a day at normal highway speeds, without the need for lane closures. The FHWA Office of Asset Management has posted FHWA/NMDOT’s 2008 collaborative Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD) study on the link followed on this article.
