House Turns toward Extension

AASHTO Journal, 23 March 2012

With only days remaining before the current surface transportation authorization expires on March 31, Republican leadership in the House of Representatives this week began work on a three-month extension that would keep the program going through the end of June, 2012. The bill, titled “Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2012” or H.R. 4239, was officially introduced Thursday.

If approved, it would be the ninth short-term extension of the 2005 surface transportation authorization law known as “SAFETEA-LU,” which originally expired Sept. 30, 2009.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Florida, told the Washington Post this week that he expects to begin work on another 5-year transportation funding bill once the House approves an extension.
