Engineering News-Record (ENR)/Southwest magazine has named the Nevada Department of Transportation “Transportation Owner of the Year” in the southwestern United States. The award was given to NDOT for its innovative construction of state road projects.
ENR identified multiple projects as examples of NDOT’s innovative construction: the West Mesquite Interchange Design-Build project, I-80 Design-Build project, I-15 South Design-Build project, I-15 Mobility Alliance Study, and the I-15 North Design-Build project, the last of which was completed in 2009 roughly eight months ahead of schedule.
“These projects not only improve our transportation infrastructure, they also help improve our economy,” said NDOT Director Susan Martinovich in a statement. “Independent studies in Nevada show an economic gain of approximately $1.50 for every $1 invested in transportation. That helps create jobs and economic stimulus here in Nevada.”
The award also cited other NDOT accomplishments, notably its partnering and electronic bidding innovations, major bridge projects, and its use of the construction manager at risk construction method to save time and money.
