2012 TIGER Grants Awarded to 10 State and D.C. DOTs

AASHTO Journal, 29 June 2012

Ten state transportation departments, along with the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, were named as recipients of 2012 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program grants, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced last Friday.

“President Obama’s support for an America built to last is putting people back to work across the country building roads, bridges, and other projects that will mean better, safer transportation for generations to come,” LaHood said in a statement. “TIGER projects mean good transportation jobs today and a stronger economic future for the nation.”

The 11 projects to be completed by state (and D.C.) transportation departments with help from the 2012 TIGER grants are:

  • D.C. Department of Transportation’s Anacostia Bicycle and Pedestrian Project (TIGER to fund $10 million of the $15 million project)
  • Maine Department of Transportation’s Martin Memorial Bridge Replacement (TIGER to fund $5.2 million of the $8.67 million project)
  • New York State Department of Transportation’s Rochester Inter-modal Transportation Center (TIGER to fund $15 million of the $27.5 million project)
  • Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Wayne Junction Substation Replacement (in partnership with the City of Philadelphia and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) (TIGER to fund $12.86 million of the $25.7 million project)
  • Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s I-95 Providence Viaduct Project (TIGER to fund $10 million of the $169 million project)
  • Vermont Agency of Transportation’s Northern Vermont Freight Rail Project (TIGER to fund $7.91 million of the $11.26 million project)
  • Illinois Department of Transportation’s Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) program projects (TIGER to fund $10.44 million of the $17.7 million project)
  • Arizona Department of Transportation’s I-15 Virgin River Gorge Bridge (TIGER to fund $21.6 million of the $27 million project)
  • Colorado Department of Transportation’s I-25 North Managed Lanes Extension and Express Bus Project (TIGER to fund $15 million of the $44.3 million project)
  • Oregon Department of Transportation’s Siskiyou Summit Railroad Revitalization (TIGER to fund $7.09 million of the $9.49 million project)
  • Washington State Department of Transportation’s North Spokane Corridor Railroad Realignment (TIGER to fund $10 million of the $31.5 million project)

A total of 47 projects from 34 states and D.C. were all given TIGER money. USDOT received 703 applications from all 50 states as well as all U.S. territories and the District of Columbia for this round of TIGER grants. A total of $10.2 billion was requested through all of those applications, a much larger number than the $500 million allotted for the program.
