LaHood Touts Progress, Admonishes Sequestration, and Thanks AASHTO Members

AASHTO Journal, 1 March 2013

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was on hand during AASHTO’s Washington Briefing Wednesday to talk about the transportation successes achieved during his term, while also thanking AASHTO and its members for having a major hand in that success.

LaHood referenced the strides in high-speed rail, the success of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants, port investments, highway and bridge improvements, and the passage of a surface transportation bill last year as significant accomplishments of his tenure at USDOT.

“We have made historic progress,” LaHood said. “AASHTO has been a leader, and we are grateful for the partnership.”

Overall, LaHood told Washington Briefing attendees he wants to see the U.S. stand as the top nation in the world for transportation as it once was.

“How do we become number one again?” LaHood asked. “We need to think outside the box, and I know AASHTO can play a big role in that.”
