Upcoming SHRP2 Webinar to Focus on Using Reliability Performance Measures in Transportation Planning

AASHTO Journal, 16 August 2013

The Transportation Research Board announced it will host a webinar next month on the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2)’s project Incorporating Reliability Performance Measures into the Transportation Planning and Programming Processes, as part of its SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series.

SHRP2’s Incorporating Reliability Performance Measures into the Transportation Planning and Programming Processes provides a “how-to” handbook for state and local transportation agencies to integrate mobility and reliability performance measures and strategies into transportation planning and programming. It provides guidance on how to maintain or improve traffic throughout existing systems before capacity enhancement projects are undertaken or where capacity improvements cannot be undertaken. The webinar will focus on:

  • How to use reliability performance measurement to understand and communicate reliability;
  • Displaying emerging travel time reliability analysis tools to make program and project investment choices that address the reliability of the system;
  • Learning how to incorporate reliability into existing analysis tools; and
  • Understanding how the project guide may help users measure and track reliability performance, incorporating reliability into policy statements, evaluating reliability needs or deficiencies, and using reliability performance measures to make investment decisions.

The free webinar will feature presentations by Douglas Laird of the Federal Highway Administration, Anita Vandervalk-Ostrander of Cambridge Systematics, Inc., and Bill Hyman of TRB. Hyman will also moderate the entire discussion.

The webinar will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 2-3 p.m. EDT, with an additional half hour afterwards for questions and further discussion.

TRB administers the SHRP2 program under a memorandum of understanding with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration.

Additional information on the webinar, including registration details, is available here. Further information on can be found at SHRP2.transportation.org.
