Demand for FHWA Discretionary Grants 31 Times Available Funding

The Federal Highway Administration received more than 1,800 applications from state transportation departments totaling nearly $13 billion for Fiscal Year 2011 discretionary grants, but had only $417 million appropriated. Demand for this year’s grants exceeded supply by more than 30 times.

FHWA announced $417 million in grant awards Wednesday. Grants will fund an array of efforts ranging from interstate maintenance to research into innovative bridge materials and construction methods.
