Smith Resigns As Georgia Transportation Commissioner; Golden Named Interim

Vance Smith Jr. resigned Wednesday as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation.Prior to his resignation, Smith appointed GDOT Operations Director Keith Golden to the position of deputy commissioner, according to a statement issued by Georgia Transportation Board Chairman Rudy Bowen. In accordance with state law, Golden takes over as interim commissioner of GDOT.

A 25-year Georgia DOT veteran, Golden is a licensed professional engineer and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his Georgia DOT career in planning and has held numerous management positions, most recently in traffic operations.

Smith will remain as an adviser to the department until the end of this year.
