North Carolina Starts Selling Transponders for Its First Tollway

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority began selling electronic transponders this week for the state’s first toll road. NC Quick Pass devices are available for $5.Transponders can be used beginning in January, when the Turnpike Authority is scheduled to begin collecting tolls on the first section of the Triangle Expressway through Research Triangle Park and western Wake County near Raleigh. The first section will open in December and there will be a free period of several weeks for motorists to try out the new highway without paying tolls.

The remainder of the Triangle Expressway is slated to open in phases, in August and December 2012, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported.

All tolls on the Triangle Expressway will be collected electronically. Drivers without a Quick Pass will be billed by mail at a higher rate.
