AASHTO News, 6 October 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials today announced that the popular AASHTO Mobile app is now available for Android powered mobile devices.

“Launching the Android version of AASHTO Mobile is another step in our strategic effort to make transportation news and information more accessible, wherever and whenever people want it,” said Lloyd Brown, AASHTO’s director of communications. “The Android operating system is used in a significant number of smartphones and tablet computers, making the Android version of the AASHTO Mobile app a critical piece of the agency’s mobile application strategy.”

AASHTO Mobile, which debuted as an iPhone app in June, features real-time traffic conditions powered by INRIX, a provider of traffic information and driving services to leading automakers, navigation providers, and transportation agencies around the world.

The app also features optimized versions of two popular transportation news sites: the Daily Transportation Update and the AASHTO Journal, a weekly news report. In addition, the app offers the latest AASHTO news releases and direct links to more than 100 original AASHTO videos including a weekly newscast through its online video channel, Transportation TV.

Both the iPhone and Android versions of the AASHTO Mobile app were developed by iENGINEERING of Chantilly, Virginia, a global information-engineering firm specializing in the development of engineering software and collaborative e-business applications.

“The AASHTO Mobile app will help people stay informed,” Brown said. “However it should not be used while driving. We encourage people to use the app to make their travel plans; however once they get behind the wheel their only focus should be on driving safely.”
