AASHTO Journal, 9 December 2011

West Virginia celebrated Monday the opening of the newest 1.6-mile section of the East Beckley Bypass.Paul Mattox, West Virginia’s transportation secretary, was joined by Rep. Nick Rahall, D-West Virginia and ranking minority member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; Tom Smith, the Federal Highway Administration’s division administrator; and other state and local officials.

“This project has been in development for many years and would not have progressed as quickly without the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Mattox said in a statement, “and many others who have remained dedicated to this project and the potential it holds for the region.”

The project cost $33 million. Future progress will ultimately bring the East Beckley Bypass beyond Stanaford Road to tie back into U.S. 19 at Industrial Drive north of Beckley.
