Michigan DOT Puts Transportation Dashboard on the Web

AASHTO Journal, 27 January 2012

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced Tuesday it has reinvented its transportation dashboard to track the department’s performance in achieving specific transportation-related goals.Performance measurement documents that appear elsewhere on the MDOT website now appear in one convenient place. The dashboard — along with other public reports such as the quarterly highway bridge safety report, MDOT Strategic Plan, Five-Year Transportation Program, and Transportation System Performance Measures Report — can be quickly located by clicking on the “MDOT Performance” tab on the right-hand side of MDOT’s homepage, www.michigan.gov/mdot.

“MDOT has been documenting performance measures all along and making this information available to the public,” Michigan Transportation Director Kirk Steudle, president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, said in a statement. “With this move, we are making it easy for citizens to track our progress.”

Steudle said the new “MDOT Performance” section of the department’s website will be updated frequently and expanded in coming months.

“Performance measurements are critical to our commitment to deliver the highest quality transportation services and encourage accountability, innovative thinking, and making the best use of our limited resources,” he said. “MDOT wants to be transparent about our efforts to work better, faster, cheaper, safer, and smarter.”

The revamped transportation dashboard tracks progress in economic growth, safety, accountability, mobility, and conditions. It is available at 1.usa.gov/MDOTdashboard.
