RICHMOND, Va. – A plan to borrow billions of dollars for road projects proposed by Virginia’s Republican governor won a key vote Tuesday from a largely Democratic Senate Finance Committee. The budget panel’s 12-2 vote sends Gov. Bob McDonnell’s $4 billion transportation funding plan to the full Senate for a vote, where several Democrats have already voiced their approval.
The House version of the bill, which calls for borrowing $3 billion over three years, was approved by the Appropriations Committee on Monday with a 17-5 vote.
If approved, the plan would fund 900 projects including the widening of Interstate 66 and high-occupancy toll lanes on interstates 95 and 395.
