Emergency Relief Program Helps Out Seven States

AASHTO Journal, 13 April 2012

Seven states are splitting a roughly $62 million pot of money given out through Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief program, which reimburses states for the repair and reconstruction of federal-aid highways and bridges that suffer serious damage because of natural disasters or catastrophic events.

Alabama, Alaska, Kentucky, Maine, South Carolina, Washington State, and Wyoming will be receiving the money for a variety of events taking place from May 2006 to January of this year. Allocations range from $46,000 to nearly $21 million.

“The Obama Administration is committed to getting resources in the hands of communities to help them recover quickly,” said U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement. “This emergency relief money will help restore roads and bridges so people can travel safely.”

FHWA Administrator Victor Mendez echoed Secretary LaHood’s statements.

“Roads and bridges act as vital links in local communities who feel their loss after natural disasters,” Mendez said. “The Department is committed to repaying states for all the work that was necessary immediately following these events to help people get back to normal faster.”
