WASHINGTON –The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials today joined with 16 other national transportation advocacy and trade organizations in urging Congress to pass an adequately funded transportation bill by the end of this month.
In the letter addressed to the 47 member House and Senate Conference Committee attempting to draft a surface transportation bill, the group states, “It is critical that this legislation be enacted by June 30, the date on which the programs will expire without further Congressional action. A six-month extension is not the way to go. This approach could further exacerbate the Highway Trust Fund’s financial crisis and cause states to cut back on transportation investments during what should be the peak construction season.”
The letter sent to the conference committee today, is co-signed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, National Asphalt Pavement Association, Association of Equipment Manufacturers, Associated General Contractors of America, National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association, American Road & Transportation Builders Association, Laborers’ International Union of North America, American Public Transportation Association, American Highway Users Alliance, American Trucking Associations, American Council of Engineering Companies, American Society of Civil Engineers, International Union of Operating Engineers, American Moving & Storage Association, American Concrete Pavement Association, Associated Equipment Distributors and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
