Nevada DOT Director Honored by White House as “Champion of Change”

AASHTO Journal, 3 August 2012

Nevada Department of Transportation Director Susan Martinovich stopped by the White House on Tuesday to receive some recognition.

Martinovich was named a Champion of Change by the administration for her work at NDOT, namely for spearheading NDOT’s accelerated delivery program, vehicle miles traveled study, and the state’s Zero Fatalities traffic safety goal and public education program. She was joined by other Transportation Innovators, all of whom have “provided exemplary leadership in the growth and expansion of the transportation industry at the local, state, or regional level.”

“Today’s Champions are leaders in developing and implementing innovative transportation initiatives,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement. “They are making a difference every day in their local communities and across the country by improving America’s transportation infrastructure and helping their friends and neighbors get where they need to go.”

President Obama created the Champions of Change program as part of his Winning the Future initiative. The administration recognizes individuals from a different sector every week that are serving and strengthening their communities.

“I was very honored and humbled to receive this recognition,” Martinovich said. “I felt that this was an opportunity to represent all the states and the AASHTO partners in our efforts to deliver safe and quality projects. All of us are continually looking to technology, innovation, and hard work to keep the transportation system moving to the future. I applaud the President and Secretary LaHood for this focus on transportation.”

Martinovich has spent the last 28 years at NDOT and is the immediate past president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. She has recently announced her intention to retire in the fall (see related story: bit.ly/AJNDOT).
