Maryland DOT Names New Acting Secretary

AASHTO Journal, 7 September 2012

Maryland Department of Transportation has undertaken some leadership changes within the last month.

Darrell Mobley, previously serving as MDOT Deputy Transportation Secretary, has been appointed acting secretary by Gov. Martin O’Malley. Mobley succeeds Beverly Swaim-Staley, who left her post as Secretary in July.

Mobley was named Deputy Transportation Secretary in January 2011 and was previously a member of the Montgomery County Transit Task Force. He also filled in as the Interim State Highway Administrator from July to December 2011. Prior to these roles, Mobley worked as the Maryland State Highway Administration’s District Engineer for both Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

With experience in both the public and private sector, Mobley holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware. He also holds two associate’s degrees — one in construction management and another in land surveying technology.

In his new role, Mobley oversees MDOT’s $3.6 billion annual budget and 10,000 employees, as well as all areas of transportation including highway, transit, and rail networks; motor vehicles; Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; and the Port of Baltimore.
