Public Casts 300,000 Votes in America’s Transportation Awards, One Week Remains to Weigh In

AASHTO Journal, 12 October 2012

The public has one more week to get their online votes cast to determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award in the 2012 America’s Transportation Award competition and add to the almost 300,000 votes already cast this year.

The final week of voting will determine the winner, as the competition has remained close. Currently in its fifth year, the competition is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Projects in ten states are competing for the People’s Choice Award, which is being decided by popular online vote: California, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia. These top 10 projects are also vying for the national Grand Prize, which will be decided by a panel of judges.

Winners of each national prize will receive $10,000 to give to a charity or other nonprofit of their choosing. Both awards will be presented Nov. 18 at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh.

The 10 finalists received the highest number of overall points during four regional contests representing each part of the country. A total of 49 projects from a record 34 states were judged in the categories “Ahead of Schedule,” “Under Budget,” and “Best Use of Innovation.” In the five years it has been held, 226 projects from 47 states and the District of Columbia have participated in the America’s Transportation Award competition, and more than 1 million votes have been cast for the People’s Choice award.

Voting, as well as project descriptions and photos, is available at AmericasTransportationAward.org. Individuals may vote up to 10 times per day for their favorite projects.
