AASHTO Releases Cost Estimating Guide for State DOTs

AASHTO Journal, 22 March 2013

EST-1_CoverWeb.jpgThe American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has just released a new publication, Practical Guide to Cost Estimating, 1st Edition.

Developed by the AASHTO Subcommittee on Design, this new guide provides practical guidance to those charged with the development of state department of transportation cost estimates and the management of the estimating process.

A state DOT’s ability to successfully manage and deliver its programs is largely dependent upon its ability to develop realistic estimates of project costs. Cost estimating involves collecting the relevant factors related to the scope of a project and the cost of resources, as well as anticipating cost impacts that may occur due to changes in project scope, available resources, and national and global market conditions.

Part I of the cost estimating guide focuses on key cost estimate techniques, while Part II focuses on cost management activities. The complete table of contents and a publication summary are available to download from the AASHTO Online Bookstore.

The 228-page guide is available in print (Print Item Code: EST-1) and as an online downloadable publication (Online Download Item Code: EST-1-UL) from the AASHTO Bookstore. The cost of the publication is $144, or $120 for AASHTO member organizations.

To order a copy, visit the AASHTO bookstore online at bookstore.transportation.org, or contact the AASHTO Fulfillment Center by phone at 800-231-3475.
