Obama considering Charlotte Mayor Foxx for DOT Post

President Barack Obama is considering the Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, Anthony Foxx as the new secretary of transportation. Democrat Foxx, 41, has been an advocate of street car and light rail projects since he was elected mayor in 2009 and re-elected in 2011.

Obama is also said to be considering Deborah Hersman, head of the National Transportation Safety Board, for the post, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke anonymously because the deliberations have not been made public. The President is also looking at candidates within the transportation department to replace current transportation secretary Ray LaHood, who announced in January that he was leaving once a successor has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Obama has open slots remaining in the formation of his second-term cabinet at the departments of transportation and commerce, the office of U.S. Trade Representative and the Small Business Administration.
