Iowa DOT Launches New Website to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

AASHTO Journal, 19 April 2013

The Iowa Department of Transportation this week launched a new website to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the department, featuring a variety of images, stories, and features to help citizens of the state celebrate the event.

The new website includes a graphical timeline that outlines the major transportation milestones reached by the state, a gallery of historic Iowa transportation photos, a Storify feed of all anniversary coverage and transportation history articles, announcements for all anniversary activities going on in the community, and a list of all of Iowa DOT’s history resources for the public. Also on the new site is a blog, featuring stories about transportation advances in Iowa and how those advances affected citizens in the state. The blog is open to the public and Iowa DOT is encouraging those interested to share stories about how individuals have played a part in Iowa’s transportation history.

Iowa DOT was first created as the Iowa State Highway Commission in 1913 as a way to fix the original roadway system, which had been built as a network of dirt, wooden plank, gravel, and crushed clamshell roads. Soon, the roadways turned to mud, so the Iowa State Highway Commission was created to come up with a better roadway system and get Iowans out of mud. In 1974, all transportation modes in the state became part of the organization, which was then renamed the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Iowa DOT’s 100th anniversary website is available here.
