FHWA and AASHTO Announce SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Opportunities

AASHTO Journal, 3 May 2013

To help states take full advantage of products developed through the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2), the Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials today announced that implementation and technical assistance will be provided to 34 states and the District of Columbia.

The assistance opportunities to implement six new SHRP2 Solutions will be made available at three participation levels: proof of concept pilot; lead adopter incentive; and user incentive. The products include:

  • Innovative Bridge Designs for Rapid Renewal (R04): nine projects
  • Managing Risk in Rapid Renewal Projects (R09): two projects
  • Innovative Strategies for Managing Complex Projects (R10): five projects
  • Preservation on High-Volume Roadways (R26): 51 projects
  • Implementing Eco-Logical (C06): 14 projects
  • Organizing for Reliability Tools (L01/L06): 27 projects

Overall, two proof of concept pilots, 74 lead adopter incentives, and 24 user incentives were announced. Limited technical assistance will also be provided to eight states.

“This tremendous start to the implementation program illustrates the high interest of state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, and tribal DOTs in SHRP2 Solutions,” according to an email sent today to all states and D.C., signed by FHWA Executive Director Jeff Paniati, AASHTO President and Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Mike Lewis, and AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright. “We commend the commitment and willingness of states to take the lead as early adopters in the deployment of SHRP2 technologies and innovations.”

A second round of the Implementation Assistance Program will be announced later this summer, rolling out the next series of SHRP2 Solutions and assistance opportunities. A full list of projects involved in this round of SHRP2 implementation assistance is available here.

SHRP2 is a national partnership of three transportation organizations: AASHTO, FHWA, and the Transportation Research Board. Together, these partners are deploying products that will help the transportation community enhance the productivity, boost the efficiency, increase the safety, and improve the reliability of the nation’s highway system. More information about SHRP2, the individual products, and other material is available at SHRP2.transportation.org.
