Illinois Joins 70 MPH States

Tom Warne Report, 27 August 2013

Land Line Magazine – August 20, 2013

The governor of Illinois signed a bill into law last week to raise speed limits on certain highways in the state and on the Illinois Tollway. The change will take effect on Jan. 1, 2014, and makes Illinois the 28th state to allow drivers to travel 70 mph or higher, according to the Governors Highway Safety Administration. Speed limits will be raised on rural four-lane highways across Illinois.

“This limited 5 miles-per-hour increase will bring Illinois’ rural interstate speed limits in line with our neighbors and the majority of states across America,” Governor Quinn said in a news release. He said counties will have an option to opt-out to allow adjustments based on their local needs.
