LAS VEGAS – Drivers in southern Nevada are going to see an influx of road construction with the extra cash from a gas tax increase. The Clark County Commission voted Tuesday to raise the gas tax to generate $700 million to fund 183 transportation projects. The gas tax hike is linked to inflation, with the first three-cent-per-gallon increase starting in January. Over the next three years, the Regional Transportation Commission said the average driver will pay about 10-cents per day from the gas tax hike.

By the third year, drivers will be paying an average of $52 in additional taxes at the fuel pump.

“In exchange, we will be able to continue to grow our roadway infrastructure,” said RTC general manager Tina Quigley. “This vote is going to allow southern Nevada to stay competitive with other major metropolitan regions who are investing in their transportation infrastructure.”

Projects that will benefit from the new funding include $180 to build a small stretch of the new I-11 to Phoenix, improvements to the 215 beltway, and widening U.S. 95 to Kyle Canyon Road.
