Florida DOT Meets, Exceeds All Expectations in Florida Transportation Commission Review

AASHTO Journal, 4 October 2013

The Florida Transportation Commission announced this week that the Florida Department of Transportation met or exceeded expectations in every single primary performance and production measure outlined in its yearly review, the first time that has happened since the review process began more than two decades ago.

FTC outlines 37 measures (20 primary and 17 secondary) in its annual Performance and Production Review to evaluate FDOT’s performance. The measures help FDOT and FTC assess major departmental functions, which allows FTC to make sure FDOT is managing operations in an “efficient, cost effective and business-like manner.” FTC initiated this review process 22 years ago, and while FDOT has consistently done well in the review, this year marks the first time it checked off every major measure.

“On behalf of the Florida Transportation Commission, we applaud Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad and the entire department for their continued hard work,” said FTC Chair Ron Howse in a statement. “Historically, FDOT has excelled in meeting or exceeding many of the performance measures. We are thrilled that in light of the Commission’s aggressive benchmarks identified each and every year, that the Department met or exceeded all of the 20 identified objectives.”

For the 2012/2013 fiscal year, some of those measures met or exceeded by FDOT included: the initiation of construction on 295 lane miles of additional roadway for the state’s highway system; contracting for the resurfacing of 2,482 lane miles on the state highway system; contracting to repair 153 bridges and replace another 24; awarding 525 new construction contracts valued at $2.3 billion; completing 350 construction projects at $1.4 billion; and executing 1,123 consultant contracts for preliminary engineering, design, right of way, and construction.
