DES MOINES, Iowa – Transportation officials in Iowa are proposing new rules regarding the placement of traffic cameras on state highways. The Iowa Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that new restrictions would require officials to explore and implement alternative options for handling traffic issues and the cameras could not be used as a long-term solution. The situations in which the cameras could be used on interstate highways would be limited.
Areas where the cameras would be allowed must have a history of crashes or in school zones.
A public hearing on the proposed requirements will be held October 30 in Ankeny. The Iowa Legislature looked at restricting usage of traffic cameras last session but did not take action on the issue.
