Alaska DOT Commissioner Appoints New Deputy Commissioner

AASHTO Journal, 3 January 2014

Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Commissioner Pat Kemp this week named John Binder, current ADOT&PF operations manager for its statewide aviation division, as the department’s new deputy commissioner. He will take over his new role, in which he will focus on the state’s air transportation, on Jan. 7.

“I am extremely pleased to announced John Binder as the department’s deputy commissioner,” Kemp said in a statement. “John brings to the department proven leadership and management from his time with the Air Force. He has a wealth of aviation education and experience and strong Alaskan roots.”

As deputy commissioner, Binder is tasked with managing ADOT&PF’s aviation division while also overseeing the state’s international airport system. ADOT&PF’s Division of Statewide Aviation encompasses more than 250 state-owned rural airports.

Binder began his tenure at ADOT&PF last June. Previously, Binder served as a systems analyst planner for the National Airspace Defense Program. He also spent 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2012 as a lieutenant colonel. Binder holds various degrees that will help him in his new role: a bachelor’s degree in astronautical engineering, a master’s degree in space systems, and another master’s degree in aeronautical sciences.
