The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this week approved H.R. 4926, which would rename a segment of Minnesota interstate and a scenic byway after longtime congressman and former T&I Chairman James L. Oberstar.
Sponsored by Rep. Richard Nolan (D-Minnesota), the bill would designate a portion of Interstate 35 between Forest Lake and Duluth as the “James L. Oberstar Memorial Highway” and a portion of U.S. 61 between Duluth and Grand Portage as the “James L. Oberstar National Scenic Byway.”
A similar bill, S. 2522, was sponsored by Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota).
Oberstar, who served in the House from 1975 to 2011 and who became T&I committee chairman in 2007, died in May.
