Janet Oakley, the South Carolina transportation secretary since May 2014, has notified Gov. Nikki Haley she will be resigning as CEO of the state Department of Transportation.

News agencies reported that in her resignation letter Oakley said she “appreciated the opportunity to lead the department and now look forward to spending time with my husband at our home on Edisto Island.”

Oakley also offered to stay as the agency CEO until the governor chooses the next director.

Gov. Haley and legislators have discussed ways to generate more revenue for road and bridge infrastructure. The state DOT has said it needs $1.5 billion more each year to manage the highway system in good condition.
