Joe Weber, executive director of the Texas Department of Transportation and a retired Marine Corps general, announced plans to leave as the agency’s CEO at the end of this year.

Currently next in line at the agency is Marc Williams, TxDOT’s interim deputy executive director and director of planning.

Weber stepped into the top TxDOT job on April 23, 2014, under then-governor Rick Perry.

His departure would come at the end of the first year of the new governor, Greg Abbott, and as the Texas Transportation Commission that oversees TxDOT is under a new chairman.

Prior to heading the transportation department, Weber was vice president for student affairs at Texas A&M University.

Earlier, he spent 36 years in the Marines, becoming a lieutenant general and serving tours in Europe, South America, Southeast Asia and Iraq. His assignments included supervising various road, port, aviation and rail infrastructure projects.
