Iowa’s Paul Trombino notified his staff Nov. 9 that he has resigned as director of the state Department of Transportation effective Nov. 28, after more than five years as the agency’s CEO.

Initial news reports said it was unclear who will run the agency after Trombino leaves.

The department posted a news release Nov. 10, saying “Trombino is leaving the department to pursue opportunities outside of state government.”

It also said he “has been an innovative leader for the Iowa DOT, propelling the department to reimagine the boundaries of transportation. His leadership has had positive impacts not only for the state of Iowa, but the nation. While the director does not currently have defined employment plans, we look forward to watching how his passion for innovation will shape transportation well into the future.”

Gov. Terry Branstad had announced in April 2011 that he was appointing Trombino to head the DOT, and the Senate confirmed him that June.

Prior to that Trombino worked for 17 years at the Wisconsin DOT in various senior roles
