75 mph Limit Takes Effect in Kansas; Texas Enacts 85 mph

Work crews are busy across Kansas today changing speed-limit signs on rural stretches of interstate highways, as well as segments of two U.S. routes, from 70 to 75 mph. Meanwhile, the governor of Texas signed a bill authorizing speed limits of 85 mph — the highest speed limit established by any state.Kansas’ new maximum speed limit of 75 mph was passed by the Legislature earlier this year and takes effect today. Any divided, multilane highway is eligible for the new speed limit. All of the routes chosen by the Kansas Department of Transportation for 75 mph posting are freeways, which have controlled access and interchanges. No expressways, which have at-grade intersections with cross traffic, were selected. A total of 807 miles of roadway will have the 75 mph speed limit.
