Texas DOT Reaps Large Savings from Aggressive Pavement Management

Working with the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at the University of Texas, Dr. Magdy Mikhail, a TxDOT engineer has performed an analysis showing the value of his agency’s aggressive preventive maintenance and routine maintenance program over the past few years.  CTR found that TxDOT’s stepped-up program had resulted in a 5% increase in lane-miles rated good or better, meaning that the agency was able to avoid the cost of rehabilitating 5% of its network (9,800 lane-miles) at $400,000 per lane-mile = $3.92B.
