Quantifying Pavement Sustainability

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has issued a report presenting all the findings of the project “Quantifying Pavement Sustainability” which was carried out from 2008 to 2010. The ultimate goal of the project was to develop a framework for formally incorporating sustainability into pavement engineering for the MTO. In order to achieve this goal, the project began with a comprehensive literature review of state-of-practice sustainable pavement material and technologies. The environment and economic benefits of different technologies were explored to understand their sustainable elements. Indicators to measure pavement sustainability were proposed based on the recent MTO GreenPave program evaluations and life cycle cost of pavements. Lastly, network level pavement sustainability was examined. Ideas proposed for more sustainable maintenance and rehabilitation programming at the network level, were also proposed in this project.
