AASHTO Releases New LRFD Guide Specifications for Design of Concrete-Filled FRP Tubes

AASHTO Journal, 18 January 2013

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently released a new LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) Guide Specifications for Design of Concrete-Filled FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) Tubes for Flexural and Axial Members.

Developed by the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, these new LRFD guide specifications present provisions for the analysis and design of concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer tubes (CFFT) for use as structural components in bridges. Design methodology presented in these specifications allows CFFTs to be designed as flexural members, axial compression members, or members subjected to combined flexural and axial compression in addition to shear. CFFT bridge components may include beams, arches, columns, and piles.

The specifications include three sections—Introduction, Concrete-Filled FRP Tubes, and Material Specifications—each of which contains a list of references. The complete Table of Contents, along with the Introduction, is available for download from the publication’s page on the AASHTO Bookstore.

Because these guide specifications employ the LRFD methodology, they are designed for use with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 6th Edition (2012) (Item Code: LRFDUS-6).

The 48-page guide is available in print (Item Code: LRFDFRP-1) and as an online downloadable publication (Item Code: LRFDFRP-1-UL) from the AASHTO Bookstore. The cost of the publication is $48, or $40 for AASHTO member organizations.

To order a copy, visit the AASHTO bookstore online at Bookstore.Transportation.org or contact the AASHTO Fulfillment Center by phone at 800-231-3475.

Questions about these new guide specifications should be directed to Kelley Rehm, staff liaison to the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, at krehm AT aashto.org or Carolyn Toye, publications marketing and production specialist, at ctoye AT aashto.org.
