Nebraska DOR Schedules Highway Improvement Plans

Tom Warne Report, 19 July 2013

The Chadron Record – July 16, 2013

The Nebraska Department of Roads has released its newest transportation program with projects the agency hopes to complete by 2019, including projects that will be paid for by the Build Nebraska Act. The act passed in 2011 sets aside one-quarter of a cent of the state’s 5.5-cent sales tax to pay for road construction.

The new plans include improvements scheduled for fiscal year 2014, and projected work to upgrade the road system over the next six years.

NDOR’s schedule lists using Build Nebraska funding to build the Heartland Expressway on Highway 385 and L62A to Alliance. The funds will be used to pay for three construction tiers: 2014-2015, 2016-2019. The first tier of work will mostly pay for construction around Omaha, as well as the Kearney East Bypass and the Wahoo Bypass.

The Heartland Expressway is included in the second tier of construction. In the third tier, improvement work will be made on the Lincoln South and West beltways, around Grand Island and Omaha, and from Murray to Plattsmouth.
