Sometimes even the best prepared agency is faced with an unimagined situation. TransComm’s monthly webinar, which will take place Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, will feature Washington State Department of Transportation staff describing how WSDOT responded when a mile-long, mile-wide landslide wiped out a neighborhood northeast of the Seattle area on March 22. The immediate and long-term reactions to the landslide, which killed 43 people, challenged WSDOT in unique ways.

Without a traditional “playbook,” WSDOT staff tackled the monumental task of clearing and rebuilding State Route 530 and reconnecting three reeling communities (see WSDOT’s project website, http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR530/Landslide/default.htm).

WSDOT will discuss how it approached families and citizens in a careful, sensitive and respectful way during the aftermath and clean up.
