AASHTO Releases New Guide Specifications for Design of Composite Bridge Repair Materials

AASHTO Journal, 11 January 2013

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently released a new publication, Guide Specifications for Design of Bonded FRP Systems for Repair and Strengthening of Concrete Bridge Elements, 1st edition (Item Code: FRPS-1).

Developed by the AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, these new guide specifications are intended for the repair and strengthening of reinforced and pre-stressed highway bridge structures using externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer composite systems.

These new specifications are comprised of the following five sections, each of which includes a list of references:

  • General Requirements
  • Material Requirements
  • Members under Flexure
  • Members under Shear and Torsion, and
  • Members under Combined Axial Force and Flexure

The complete Table of Contents is available on the AASHTO Bookstore.

Because these guide specifications employ the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology, they are designed to supplement and for use with several other AASHTO publications which employ this methodology, including the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 6th Edition (2012) (Item Code: LRFDUS-6); the Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design, 2nd Edition, and its 2012 Interim Revisions (Item Code: LRFDSEIS-2-M); and the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications, 3rd Edition, and its 2010, 2011, and 2012 Interim Revisions (Item Code: LRFDCONS-3-M).

The 52-page guide is available in print (Item Code: FRPS-1) and as an online downloadable publication (Item Code: FRPS-1-UL) from the AASHTO Bookstore. The cost of the publication is $72, or $60 for AASHTO member organizations.

To order a copy, visit the AASHTO bookstore online at Bookstore.Transportation.org, or contact the AASHTO Fulfillment Center by phone at 800-231-3475.

Questions about these new guide specifications should be directed to Kelley Rehm, staff liaison to the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, at krehm AT aashto.org, or Carolyn Toye, publications marketing and production specialist, at ctoye AT aashto.org.
