Vermont Officials Approve Measure to Increase Gas Tax

AASHTO Journal, 3 May 2013

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed into law Monday a 5.9 cent gas tax increase in order to provide additional funding for Vermont Agency of Transportation projects. The measure was approved last week by the State Legislature and took effect Wednesday.

The measure changes the state’s gas tax structure to reflect price rather than the number of gallons sold.

Without this change, VTrans told the Burlington Free Press, revenue would have fallen by $1.6 million, making it more difficult to invest in transportation infrastructure projects. The drop in revenue could be explained by a number of factors, including increased use of fuel-efficient vehicles.

VTrans told local Fox affiliate Fox 44 that the tax would raise $25 million in transportation funding, while the federal government would then match that with $56 million. Because of the extra dollars, VTrans said it could go forward with 50 programs and projects it had delayed due to funding issues.
