A nighttime photo of bridge construction work in Florida and a video about the Razorback Regional Greenway biking and walking path in Arkansas captured Grand Prize honors from judges in AASHTO’s 2014 Faces of Transportation competition.

Florida Department of Transportation photographer Sally Dobson won for her photograph of a section of bridge being hoisted into place by an overhead gantry crane as part of the State Road 826/836 Interchange Reconstruction Project in Miami.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department won for its video in the Professional Production category, for its high-quality description of the Greenway project.

In addition, voting by more than 11,000 online viewers determined this year’s People’s Choice Award. It went to photographer Karl Nielsen for his dramatic sunset photo taken the day before the new San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened.

In all, 29 transportation department employees from 17 states, and four private citizens, submitted 88 photographs and 14 videos in the competition.

The photographic entries were judged in three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development, Historic Projects, and Taking the Road Less Traveled. Videos competed in two categories: Professional Production and In-House/Amateur/Novice.

Last year’s Grand Prize photo winner, Bill Hall of the California Department of Transportation, this time won in the Quality of Life/Community Development category for his picture of two bicyclists using the bicycle/pedestrian lanes on that same San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.

Other prizes went to pictures from Arizona and Nevada, while Caltrans nabbed an in-house production award for an underwater bridge inspection video.
