NCHRP Paths to Practice: Partner Involvement Speeds New Specifications

TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) recently piloted a new approach to facilitate the approval of new American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specs and their subsequent adoption and use by state departments of transportation. NCHRP began sharing the investigators’ early progress reports and draft specs with the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS). Stakeholders with the Federal Highway Administration and industry representatives received status updates on the progress of the research. As a result, the AASHTO specs were approved before the publication of the final research findings was published. The findings were published in NCHRP Report 796: Development and Calibration of AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals.
