State Budget Update: Fall 2011

The National Conference of State Legislatures has released a report that provides information on budgets in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The report suggests that state fiscal conditions are improving, but at a slow pace.

According to the NCSL, states report revenues are growing, expenditures in most states are stable, and, in a significant departure from past years, few states report new budget gaps opening since the current fiscal year began. However, uncertainties remain.

NCSL says that state legislative fiscal officers are concerned about global economic volatility, persistently high unemployment, long-term spending pressures, and congressional actions on federal deficit reduction.

A condensed version of the report is available free online.
