On August 1, 2007, the Interstate 35W (I 35W) Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A., collapsed shortly after 6:00 p.m. That collapse cost the lives of 13 people and injured 144 more.
Over a year after that tragic incident, the United States remains focused on the design and durability of its 590,000 bridges.
Those bridges too often blend into the backdrop of everyday existence and their ongoing importance to the nation’s quality of life can be easily overlooked. Nonetheless, they are vital transportation links carrying hundreds of thousands of vehicles every day.
